In Awe of the Ganges

The Ganges... Awestruck, I stood at the Ghats of the Ganges when I went to Rishikesh this month. The Ganges during the monsoon looked so different than what it had during my last visit in January. Then it was the beautiful Ganges – I could bring home its water.

Now... it benumbed me. The increased water level and the force of its waves should have actually intimidated me. But, there I stood - befuddled by my own emotions. No other river has filled me with such thoughts ...The Ganges is different.  I was lost in its transcendental glory, one day...I don’t know when, but I too would be one with its waves.

Every year, during this time its unparalleled beauty and serenity touch different dimensions. Undaunted by its massive force, with only love and devotion in their hearts, devotees throng Haridwar during this month to carry its water to a specific Shivalinga.

I wanted to bring home its water but I could not. I was told that we should not take home its water during the monsoons. This was knowledge to me.

The Ganges water purifies us not only when we die or want to consecrate a place but also when we just stand on its bank and become one with the sound of its waves.

Awestruck, I admired and revered its beauty day after day. Interestingly, I fell in love with the Ganges.
